One of the most popular recipes made in a dutch oven in Germany is pork shanks and there is a good reason for this; It’s tasty, juicy and very cheap to make. All you need is a proper dutch oven. This fully loaded cast iron dutch oven will easily feed a whole family at a low cost. It has everything in it to make you happy during cold winter nights.

Ingredients
- 2,5 kg pork shanks
- PitmasterX’s Classic BBQ rub
- 40 bacon strips
- 12 white onions sliced into rings
- 1 yellow bell pepper
- 1 red bell pepper
- 700 grams BBQ Sauce
Instructions
- Layer your cast iron dutch oven comepletely with bacon on the edge and the bottom as well.
- Layer the bottom with onion rings.
- Slice 2 bell peppers into strips and put them on top of the onion.
- Season all of the pork shanks with pitmaster x classic bbq rub which you can find in the link above.
- Set the shanks straight up in the dutch oven.
- Add 700 grams of BBQ sauce as a moisture to prevent it from drying out.
- Fold the bacon strips towards the middle.
- Fire up the BBQ with a lot of heat.
- Let te dutch oven come up to temperature for around 45 minutes and tune down the heat.
- Simmer for 2 hours and check if they are almost fall off the bone. 90°C/194°F
- Serve the shanks seperate on a plate with some of that bacon, onion and bell pepper on top.
